Top 5 Styling Tips for Fall Family Photos -(From One Mama to Another)

Expecting couple walking hand-in-hand through a picturesque fall field during their maternity session at Old Baker Farm in Birmingham, AL

Hey friend 🤍

Fall in Birmingham, Alabama is hands-down my favorite season for family photos, as a photographer AND a momma myself —the light is dreamy, the colors are cozy, and it’s the perfect time to capture your crew before the holiday rush. But I also know… figuring out what everyone is going to wear can feel like a whole job in itself.

That’s where I come in 🙋🏼‍♀️ —so here are my go-to top 5 styling tips for your fall family photos:

#1 Styling Tips for Fall Family Photos- Keep It Neutral + Cozy

Think soft creams, warm browns, sage, dusty rose, or muted blues. These shades always look timeless and photograph beautifully with fall’s golden light. (Translation: no stressing about clashing colors when the kids pick their own shoes 🙃).

#2 Add Texture (It Looks Fancy Without Trying)

Knits, flowy dresses, corduroy, linen… these little touches make your photos feel layered and rich. Even if you keep the palette simple, texture does the heavy lifting.

#3 Coordinate, Don’t Match- This Styling Tip is for all Family Photos!

Instead of everyone wearing the same exact shade, choose 2–3 colors and sprinkle them across the family. This keeps it natural and effortless, while still looking pulled together.

#4 Don’t Forget About My Client Closet!

This is honestly a game changer and honestly probably my favorite out of all the styling tips for fall family photos. I’ve stocked my closet with beautiful, photo-ready dresses and gowns that are flattering and totally stress-free to borrow with any full session. You don’t have to spend hours shopping or guessing if something will look right in photos—it’s all here waiting for you! 🤍

#5 Sprinkle in Little Details

A felt hat, a cute pair of boots, barefoot littles running in the field, dainty jewelry… the small things really bring the whole look together without being “too much.”
