Hey friend!! 🤍 Christmas mini sessions are almost here, and I know exactly what that means: at some point between ordering presents, managing everyone’s schedules, and trying to remember where you hid the wrapping paper, you’ll suddenly think, WHAT are we all going to wear?! 😂
As a Birmingham, Alabama family photographer and a mama of three, I get it. Choosing outfits for Christmas mini sessions should not be another thing on your already-overflowing holiday to-do list.
So I’m sharing my favorite Christmas mini session outfit ideas for 2026: light Christmas, warm neutrals, classic Christmas colors, and cozy Christmas pajamas. They each photograph beautifully for different reasons, and you absolutely do not have to buy everyone a brand-new wardrobe to pull them off.
Whether your family is meeting Santa, Mrs. C, and Burt the Reindeer or joining us for a Burt-only Christmas Experience, this guide will help you choose a look that feels like your family.

Coordinate, don’t feel obligated to match! I love a beautifully coordinated family wardrobe, but that doesn’t mean everyone needs to wear something different! Matching sibling outfits can be absolutely adorable (and y’all know I have a soft spot for them! 🤍). The trick is choosing colors and textures that complement one another, whether you’re mixing different pieces or dressing your little ones in matching outfits. Think soft knits, delicate velvet, subtle patterns, and layers that add depth without distracting from the people wearing them.
Our 2026 Christmas Experience features a charming white reindeer stable and beautiful holiday scenery near Birmingham, Alabama. Keep that in mind as you choose outfits: soft shades feel airy against the white, warm earth tones give the scene depth, and traditional reds and greens create that unmistakable Christmas feeling.

Think Soft, Airy & Timeless
There is just something about a soft, neutral Christmas palette that I will never get tired of. 🤍 It’s delicate, timeless, and has that effortlessly beautiful feel that I absolutely love in photographs.
Think creamy ivories, warm whites, soft oatmeal, champagne, delicate blush, dusty blue, and subtle touches of sage. These shades work beautifully together, creating a look that feels coordinated without being overly matched. Whether you’re drawn to light, airy tones or something a little warmer and cozier, there is so much room to make this palette your own.
And one of my favorite things about these softer colors? They photograph beautifully alongside Santa’s classic red suit, allowing those gorgeous Christmas colors to shine without competing with your family’s outfits. They’re equally lovely against natural greenery, warm wood tones, and the soft whites of our Christmas setting.
A little styling advice from behind the camera: Texture makes all the difference! Delicate embroidery, heirloom smocking, soft knits, velvet, linen, and subtle layering add dimension and interest while keeping the overall look beautifully understated. Don’t be afraid to mix warm and cool neutrals or incorporate a slightly deeper shade for contrast. The goal isn’t to match perfectly. It’s to create a look that feels cohesive, natural, and uniquely yours.
Below are a few real 5U Christmas sessions showing how beautifully these softer colors photograph. After the photos, you’ll find my curated outfit inspiration and an easy way to shop the looks.

Think Reds, Greens & All the Nostalgia

If your heart belongs to red velvet, tartan plaid, and big Christmas bows, GIRL, this is your moment! ❤️ There’s something about those traditional holiday colors that brings back all the magic of Christmas when we were little. And in photographs? They’re just as beautiful as you remember.
For a classic Christmas look, I love cranberry, burgundy, deep evergreen, warm ivory, and just a little traditional red. A touch of navy or camel can soften everything beautifully, too. The trick isn’t to dress every single person in red and green—it’s to create a palette that feels festive without competing with the faces (or with Santa’s red suit!).
Start with one outfit you absolutely love. Maybe it’s your little girl’s tartan dress, a gorgeous burgundy velvet piece, or the sweetest forest-green sweater. Then pull two or three colors from that piece to coordinate everyone else. Think cream knits and tan trousers beside plaid, or a soft ivory dress with a classic red bow. Matching siblings can be adorable; the whole family doesn’t need to match to look like they belong together.
A little styling advice from behind the camera: Let one pattern or rich color do the talking, and keep the surrounding outfits a little simpler. Velvet, soft cable knits, smocking, subtle embroidery, and timeless bows add all the pretty details without taking attention away from those little expressions you’ll want to remember.
Here’s what that looks like in real 5U Christmas sessions. I love how these families embraced the traditional colors while still making the outfits feel completely their own.

Cozy, Classic & Full of Christmas Magic

Okay, but can we talk about Christmas pajamas for a minute?! Because there is just something about little ones in their Christmas jammies that absolutely melts me. 🥹❤️ It’s sweet, nostalgic, a little playful, and has that wonderful Christmas morning feeling that I never want to forget.
Think vintage-inspired Christmas nightgowns, traditional red and white stripes, sweet holiday prints, soft knits, and coordinating family pajamas. I especially love those darling little details like ruffled collars, delicate embroidery, festive bows, and cozy textures. Whether you love traditional Christmas reds and greens or softer creams with subtle holiday patterns, there are so many adorable ways to make this look your own.
And here’s the best part: Christmas pajamas don’t have to mean identical pajamas for everyone! Matching sets are absolutely precious, especially for siblings, but mixing complementary prints and solids can be just as beautiful. If your little ones are wearing a fun holiday pattern, try pairing it with a coordinating solid for Mom and Dad. The goal is a look that feels cozy, coordinated, and full of Christmas personality without everyone competing for attention.
A little styling advice from behind the camera: Remember that our Christmas sessions take place outdoors! I love pairing vintage nightgowns with tall socks, cozy boots, or sweet little Mary Janes. For traditional pajamas, simple coordinating footwear keeps everything looking intentional while still being practical for walking around the tree farm. And don’t be afraid to add a cardigan or another cozy layer if the weather calls for it!

If the kids are wearing patterned pajamas, keep parents in complementary solid sweaters or simple holiday pajamas. For sibling photos, pick one main print or one shared color rather than four competing patterns. And yes, keep comfort at the top of the list!
That Make a BIG Difference
Start with one outfit you love.
Usually that’s mom’s dress or the little one’s special Christmas outfit. Then build the other outfits around it instead of shopping for everyone at once.
Think beyond color.
Knits, velvet, corduroy, woven fabrics, and subtle embroidery make even simple outfits feel intentional in photos.

Keep logos and big graphics to a minimum.
skip logos, and try to avoid distracting oversized prints. They can distract from your beautiful family being the center (and of course Santa, Mrs. C, and everyone’s favorite pint sized reindeer!)
Do a quick try-on before session day.
Make sure the kids can sit, walk, hug, and move comfortably. A beautiful outfit isn’t worth a miserable little person.
Set everything out the night before.
Outfits, bows, socks, shoes, and a spare layer. Future-you will be SO glad you did.
YES! In fact, that’s one of my favorite combinations! Think a beautiful burgundy velvet dress paired with cream, camel, and soft sage for the rest of the family. You get that timeless Christmas feel without everyone looking like they came straight out of the same gift-wrapped box.

Our client closet isn’t available for mini sessions, but that doesn’t mean you’re on your own! That’s exactly why I’ve put together this guide, complete with styling inspiration and shoppable outfit ideas to make getting everyone dressed a whole lot easier!
If you’re looking for something a little more personalized, our full family sessions DO include access to the 5U client closet! You can even add Burt the Reindeer to a full family session for an additional fee at select locations. Just keep in mind that Santa and Mrs. C aren’t included with our full family sessions.
Oh, please get in those pictures, too!! 🤍 I know it’s tempting to let the kids have all the fun, especially when you’re the one coordinating everyone’s outfits, but I promise those pictures of you loving on your babies are worth it!
Some of my favorite moments are the ones in between: little hands wrapped around yours, snuggles with Mama, and those genuine laughs with Daddy. Including the whole family also gives us so much more variety in your gallery, from individual portraits of the kids to all those sweet combinations together.
Trust me, years from now, your babies won’t care whether your hair was perfect. They’ll just be happy you were in the pictures with them!

Absolutely! We LOVE seeing grandparents get in on all the Christmas adorableness!! And cousins together with Burt? I’m pretty sure it doesn’t get much cuter than that! 🎄
Because our mini sessions are designed for immediate families, including grandparents, cousins, or other extended family members requires booking two back-to-back mini sessions, subject to availability. This gives us the additional time needed for different family groupings without rushing through everyone’s experience.
